SHIPPING CONTAINERS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Repurposed or upcycled shipping containers have the capacity to offer a green alternative solution to traditional brick, mortar and cement buildings.

Shockingly cement is the source of approximately 8% of the world’s Carbon Dioxide emissions. Unless a foundation is needed to be built on which the container needs to stand, there is no need for cement to repurpose a container. An upcycled container can be transformed into an Eco-cabin, when fitted with suitable insulation, and its own renewable energy sources such as solar panels, and biofuel or hydrogen fuel cell generators there is no increase in CO₂e from the repurposed container.

REPURPOSING A SHIPPING CONTAINER

Repurposing shipping containers is a great solution to the circular economy concerns and struggles of a business, it reduces waste refuse and the CO₂ emissions associated with refuse creation by repurposing an already existing structure. The fewer modifications required then the more sustainable it will be due to fewer materials required. However, increasingly more sustainable products can also be used in the modification of the structure into something new.

Biodiversity Initiatives - Pentalver Container Sales and Conversions

BIODIVERSITY INITIATIVES

The Pentalver Container Sales and Conversions Felixstowe site finds itself in the unique position whereby the operational space is already surrounded by naturally varied and healthy flora habitats. Pentalver & Freightliner joined forces with The Suffolk Wildlife Trust who kindly came to perform a site survey – we were thrilled at the vast array of options open to us – we also found out that our site is within one of the very few areas of Suffolk which would be an ideal habitat for the globally threatened stag beetle. Fortunately, minimal intervention is required to improve the flora in the area – some of the initiatives in progress include:

– Building a new Tawny Owl box
– Adding bat and kestrel boxes into trees to encourage these species to create habitats in the area
– Creating a log shelter on the ground level to encourage stag beetles into the area

This site is encouragingly already reporting sightings of deer, hedgehogs and a buzzard – who the operational team at Felixstowe have endearingly named George.
