Oxfordshire farm applies for shipping container farm shop

A farm has submitted a planning application to transform two shipping containers into a shop.

The Oxford Mail has reported Randal Strainge from Ducklington Farm wants to sell frozen meat from the self-service store, which will be located on site.

He has applied to West Oxfordshire District Council for planning permission, saying he believes it will complement other facilities, including the Ducklington Farm bed and breakfast and camping and caravan site.

The report states: “As the applicant is already selling meat directly to the public from the farmhouse, there will be no anticipated increase in traffic above existing levels.”

Mr and Mrs Strainge originally wanted to build a 273-square metre farm shop, complete with a cafe and outdoor playground.

However, it was denied because of its “siting, design, scale and location”, in spite of 103 letters that were submitted in support of the proposal.

The application was also refused as the local authority did not believe local farms could produce enough food to keep it supplied, and therefore, would need to stock food from further afield.

However, Ducklington Farm prides itself on producing high-quality lamb, goat and pork under its produce brand Mouldens Meats, and will stock it in the pop-up farm shop once this is approved instead.

If their recent application is given the go ahead, the container conversions will be covered in timber and fitted with a steel roof. It will be open between Monday and Saturday, 0800 and 1800, and on Sundays from 1000 to 1600.
