Shipping containers to transform Manchester city centre

Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens will be barely recognisable once it has turned into a shipping container event space in time for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Fan Festivals. 

The Manc reported how the city centre location is already seeing a stack of shipping containers being set up, which will become pop-up restaurants once fully open.

Councillor John Hacking, executive member for employment and leisure for Manchester City Council, told the publication: “We are currently working to develop the event space in Piccadilly Gardens ahead of the UEFA Women’s Euros that begins in July.”

As well as serving food, the two-storey shipping container space will boast drink traders, a big screen, and an official fan area.

Once complete, there will be a bridge over the top of walkway, and the shipping containers will be covered by plants to make them more visually appealing. 

Mr Hacking said the containers are currently being decorated with the plants and dressing before the EUROS begin on July 6th. 

While they are only set to last a few weeks, coming to an end on July 31st, the council representative stated there is potential for the structure to remain for other events in the future.

“This could include a performance space, community area, children’s activities and more,” Mr Hacking suggested. 

Last year, Piccadilly Gardens was transformed with shipping containers as part of its annual Manchester Christmas Markets.

It remains to be seen whether they will return for this Christmas, with the markets opening on November 12th and coming to a close on December 22nd 2022.
